The present study investigates the level of stress in 100 caregivers of children with cleft lip repair subjected to surgery and / or palatoplasty and compares their demographic identifiers and characteristics of careful child. After the ethical procedures of research, the Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adultsis applied, to identify the symptoms of stress of somatic and psychological types and phases of alarm, resistance, near exhaustion and exhaustion. The results indicate a predominance of mothers (98%), average age 28 (±6), in a stable relationship (83%), not employed (58%), with secondary education (52%), low socioeconomic classification (89 %) and only child (48%). From the children cared for, 50 are female, average age of 10 months (± 8), with 20% of cleft lip, 37% of isolated cleft palate and 43% of cleft lip and palate, where 36% are undergoing lip repair surgery, 42% and 27% of palatoplasty lip repair and palatoplasty. No association of sociodemographic variables and the level of caregiver stress. However, there has been stress in 75% of the participants, with a predominance of resistance phase (65%) and psychological symptoms (65%). The study concludes that the contingencies involving the child with cleft lip and palate can optimize the coping mechanisms strengthening of caregivers, as an effective adaptation strategy
