Professional health care are exposed to various occupational stressors, is persistent, can lead to Burnout Syndrome, psychosocial phenomenos, consisting of three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, despersonalization and low professional fulfillment. The objective of this study was investigate the risk factors of Burnout Syndrome in 282 nursing staff working in three hospitals in a city of Porto Alegre. The instrument used was a questionnaire survey of demographic and professional variables and MBI - Maslach Burnout Inventory-HSS. Results showed that participants female, married and working from 20 to 30 hours weekly have more emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lower job satisfaction. Participants with children showed more depersonalization and lower professional fulfillment. The age range of 18 to 30 years and that of 6 to 10 years of experience showed greater emotional exhaustion.
