^lpt^aA Teoria da Mente (ToM) diz respeito à habilidade de inferir estados mentais a si próprio e a terceiros, no intuito de compreender e predizer comportamentos. Aspectos da ToM em doenças como autismo e esquizofrenia já se encontram bem consolidados na literatura, porém seu comportamento nas síndromes demenciais, sobretudo às corticais, vem sendo escassamente abordado. Estas por sua vez, são caracterizadas por déficits em vários domínios cognitivos, com prejuízos à vida de relação desses indivíduos. O objetivo do estudo foi proceder a uma breve revisão da literatura pertinente ao tema e discutir alguns de seus achados. Procedeu-se revisão de literatura utilizando as bases de dados MEDLINE, LILACS, PORTAL CAPES e SCIELO. As palavras chave utilizadas em inglês e português, respectivamente, foram: Theory of mind, Theory of mind and dementia; Teoria da Mente e Demência, tendo como critérios ano de publicação (a partir de 2000) e relevância do tema. Foram encontrados e descritos 4 artigos diretamente implicados no tema proposto, além de artigos que relacionam os achados a bases neurais circunscritas. A literatura associa alterações da ToM a quadros demenciais, havendo particularidades conforme o tipo e substrato neural envolvido. Nesse sentido a demência frontotemporal variante frontal, parece ser o protótipo dessa condição, sabendo-se, entretanto, que várias áreas cerebrais estão envolvidas e interconectadas no processamento da ToM.^len^aTheory of Mind (ToM) concerns to ability to infer mental states to himself and others, in order to understand and foretell behaviors. Aspects of ToM in diseases like autism and schizophrenia are already established in literature, however their behaviors in dementia, especially the cortical, has been scarcely addressed. These, on the order hand, are characterized by deficits in several cognitive fields, with damage to the life of the relationship of these individuals. The aim of this study was to go along a brief review of the literature concerning the subject and discuss some of their findings. Procedure was a literature review using the MEDLINE, LILACS, PORTAL CAPES and SCIELO. The key words used in English and Portuguese, respectively, were: Theory of Mind, Theory of Mind and Dementia, the criteria were year of publication (from 2000) and relevance of the topic. We found and described 4 articles involved in the proposed subject, as well as articles that relate the findings to neural bases circumscribed. The literature associates changes in ToM to dementia, with particular depending on the type and neural substrate involved. Accordingly the frontal variant frontotemporal dementia, appears to be the prototype of this condition, knowing, however, that several brain areas are involved and interconnected in the processing of ToM.
