^lpt^aO nascimento marcado pela urgência ocorre concomitantemente com o risco de morte, doença e/ou deficiência, podendo desdobrar-se em uma incerteza insuportável. O nascimento de risco marca apenas o início de um longo procedimento médico-tecnológico que vai manter em suspenso a definição de vida e de morte para aquele bebê. Esse evento potencialmente traumático pode trazer prejuízos para a maternidade, afetando a relação mãe-bebê e o processo de constituição psíquica da criança. O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi investigar as representações maternas acerca do nascimento prematuro, por meio de um estudo qualitativo, fundamentado na Psicanálise. Foram realizadas 15 entrevistas semi-estruturadas com as mães de bebês prematuros durante a internação do filho na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo e mostraram que o nascimento prematuro é uma desconstrução da imagem do bebê imaginário da gravidez e afeta a sustentação da função materna. Os resultados mostraram a necessidade de um espaço de escuta para os pais para auxiliá-los na elaboração do luto do bebê imaginário, resgatando a competência da função materna e a sustentação de um lugar simbólico para o bebê advir como sujeito.^len^aThe birth marked by urgency happens concurrently with the risk of death, illness and/or disability, and can unfold in an intolerable uncertainty. The birth of risk marks only the beginning of a long medical and technological proceeding that will put on hold the definition of life and death for that baby. This potentially traumatic event can bring damage in maternity, affecting the mother-child relationship and the child's psychic constitution process. The objective of this research was to investigate the maternal representations of premature birth, through a qualitative study, based on psychoanalysis. 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with mothers of premature babies during hospitalization of the child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The data were subjected to content analysis and showed that preterm birth is a deconstruction of the image of the imaginary baby of pregnancy and affects the sustention of the maternal function. The results showed the necessity for a listening space for parents to assist them in the preparation of the imaginary baby mourning, rescuing the competence of the maternal function and the sustention of a symbolic place for the baby to come as a subject.
