MOURA, Francielle Fialho de et al. Common mental disorders symptoms' prevalence in a General Hospital's patients of South of Brazil. []. , 23, 2, pp.139-148. ISSN 1516-0858.

The objective of the study was to screen for symptoms of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) in patients admitted to a University Hospital in the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul. This cross-sectional study had a sample of 48 participants who answered the Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) Brazilian version and sociodemographic, health condition and hospitalization questions. The data was analysed according to the absolute frequencies of each variable and the SRQ-20 score was compared with sociodemographic profile using the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests (p <0.05). The results suggested symptoms of CMD in 19 (39.6%) patients, 15 (78.9%) of them had a chronic disease. There was a statistically significant association between CMD and the variables "marital status" (p = 0.025) and "living with " (p = 0.037), indicating less symptoms of TCM in married patients, and among those who cohabited with their spouse or partner. It is concluded that SRQ-20 can be an important tool for psychological assessment of hospitalized patients in helping to develop mental health care.
