^lpt^aO artigo teve como objetivo compreender como a doença crônica afeta a percepção do papel social de homens idosos a partir da construção social de velhice, e de que forma velhice, como uma categoria social, traz implicações à subjetividade destes sujeitos, suas relações sociais e de trabalho. Se trata de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa descritiva, realizada a partir de entrevista semiestruturada. O estudo foi realizado em um hospital universitário, com dez homens, com idade entre 60 e 76 anos, portadores de doenças cardiovasculares crônicas. Os dados foram analisados a partir dos eixos temáticos elencados na entrevista: Adoecimento físico; Envelhecimento; Papel social; em seguida, foram expostos os núcleos de significado encontrados a partir das falas dos entrevistados. Conclui-se que a doença crônica e o envelhecimento trazem modificações significativas no que se refere à autonomia e relações sociais destes sujeitos, sendo que o modo como cada um percebe este processo está associado ao apoio familiar, e papel social desempenhado. O papel social exercido pelo homem idoso é um fator que repercute significativamente no cuidado em saúde e na vivência subjetiva do processo de envelhecimento.^len^aThe article aimed to understand how chronic disease affects the perception of the social role of elderly men from the social construction of old age, and how old age, as a social category, has implications for the subjectivity of these subjects, their social and working relations. This is a qualitative and descriptive research, carried out from a semi-structured interview. The study was carried out in a university hospital, with ten men, aged between 60 and 76 years, with chronic cardiovascular disease. The data were analyzed from the thematic axes listed in the interview: Physical illness; Aging; Social role; then, the nuclei of meaning found from the interviewees' statements were exposed. It is concluded that chronic disease and aging bring significant changes regarding the autonomy and social relationships of these subjects, and the way each one perceives this process is associated with family support, and the social role played. The social role of an elderly man is a factor that significantly affects health care and the subjective experience of the aging process.
