The Medical Residency involves changes in the resident physician's life and intense contact with pain, illness and death, placing the professionals at risk of emotional distress. This study aims to analyze the experiences of resident physicians in their training in a public hospital in Santa Catarina. Eight students, in their second year of residence (R2), participated in the meetings. It is a qualitative research, based on content analysis. The techniques used for data collection was the focus group and a script composed open-ended question that promoted conversation. The two meetings held were recorded and the information transcribed. The collected data was sorted and categorized creating thematic categories: (a) Impact of the Medical Residence on the Physician`s Personal Life; (b) Becoming a Physician and Professional; (c) Resident Physicians and Institutional Aspects. The reference used was the Health and Hospital Psychology. It was concluded that Psychology can offer an important contribution in medical training with regard to the person of the doctor, as well as at the technical and institutional levels to propose measures to promote emotional health to residents. The hospital institution stood out as a potential space for the creation of new configurations of the teaching-learning process.
