^lpt^aA prematuridade constitui motivo de preocupação para a saúde pública, tendo em vista a significativa taxa de óbito neonatal e morbidade, além dos riscos psíquicos que podem advir do nascimento prematuro. A literatura aponta que ter um bebê com baixo peso, pouco responsivo aos apelos dos pais e diferente do que foi imaginado, pode provocar desinvestimento afetivo da mãe em relação ao bebê, ocasionando dificuldades no processo de vinculação entre eles. Assim, esse estudo teve como finalidade analisar as vivências de mães de bebê prematuro com extremo baixo peso (<1.000g) internado na UTI Neonatal, bem como os impactos no interesse da mãe pelo bebê. A pesquisa foi transversal descritiva, de natureza qualitativa. Foram entrevistadas 8 mães dentro dos critérios elegíveis da pesquisa e os dados coletados foram examinados mediante a análise de conteúdo. Os resultados apontaram que a experiência do parto prematuro gerou desamparo, angústia e sensação de impotência para a mulher. Entretanto, as mães mantiveram a aposta no filho, a idealização do mesmo e a esperança de desenvolvimento contínuo.^len^aPrematurity is a matter of concern for public health, given the significant rate of neonatal death and morbidity, in addition to the psychological risks that may arise from premature birth. The literature points out that having a baby with low birth weight, unresponsive to the parents' appeals and different from what was imagined can affect the mother's affective investiment in relation to the baby, causing difficulties in the bonding process between them. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the experiences of mothers of premature babies with extremely low weight (<1,000g) admitted to the Neonatal ICU, as well as the impacts on the mother's interest in the baby. The research was cross-sectional, descriptive, qualitative. Eight mothers were interviewed within the eligible criteria of the research and the collected data were examined through content analysis. The results showed that the experience of premature birth generated helplessness, anguish, and a feeling of impotence for the woman. However, the mothers maintained their bet on the child, their idealization and the hope of continuous development.
