^lpt^aO presente trabalho teve como objetivos: identificar e analisar os conteúdos e a estrutura da representação social da AIDS dos trabalhadores de um hospital universitário; e comparar a estrutura da representação social da AIDS entre subgrupos, a partir da variável idade. A amostra foi constituída por 366 trabalhadores que atuam num hospital universitário da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio da técnica de associação livre e a análise pela técnica do quadro de quatro casas. O resultado mostrou que o significado da AIDS para esses sujeitos é fortemente marcado por elementos negativos, traz uma dimensão imagética associada à morte e reflete o posicionamento dos sujeitos por emoções e atitudes como sofrimento, medo e preconceito. A comparação dos subgrupos não configura representações sociais distintas, porém, mostra diferenças na importância atribuída em alguns conteúdos dessa representação.^len^aThe present work aimed at: identifying and analyzing the contents and the structure of AIDS-related social representation of workers of a university hospital; and comparing AIDS social representation structure among age-grouped subgroups. 366 workers at a university hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro formed the sample. The data collection had been performed through free association technique and by four-house board technique. The outcome showed that the meaning of AIDS for them is strongly marked by negative elements, brings an imagetic dimension associated to death and reflects these subjects position through emotions and attitudes such as suffering, fear and prejudice. The subgroups comparison does not represent distinct social representations, however, it shows some differences for the importance attributed to some contents of these representations.
