Chronic substance use and abuse may associate with the occurrence of several negative events that affect people's quality of life. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the use of substance types and the distinct domains of quality of life as assessed by the WHOQOL-bref. Participants were 105 Brazilian adults from a community sample (mean age = 23.91, SD = .51; 57.14% women). Results revealed that impairments in quality of life were detected only for use of cocaine and anxiolytic drugs; unexpectedly, there was a tendency toward positive relationships between the use of stimulant substances and quality of life. Prevalence rates of moderate use of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana were very high. Findings are discussed considering earlier studies and the possibility of an idiosyncratic composition of the sample employed in the study.
