^lpt^aO aparecimento da Síndrome de Down na mídia, sobretudo na televisão e cinema, tem suscitado diversas discussões acerca do assunto. Além disso, a emergência da inclusão escolar dessas pessoas vem gerando, desde a década de 1990, uma demanda dos educadores por informação a respeito não apenas da síndrome em questão, mas também de outras deficiências. O presente artigo pretende dedicar-se aos limites sociais que foram construídos a partir do século XIX, quando a deficiência passa a ser posta em questão pela medicina moderna. A deficiência mental, por ser o aspecto mais característico desta síndrome, também será discutida no artigo tanto em relação aos fatores sociais e históricos de sua constituição, como alguns de seus aspectos psicológicos, com base na psicologia sócio-histórica. O texto organiza-se em duas partes: a primeira dedica-se a apresentar um breve histórico do discurso médico-científico da deficiência iniciado na Europa em fins de século XVIII. A segunda discorre sobre a Síndrome de Down e a deficiência mental, abordando aspectos orgânicos e sociais de constituição.^len^aThe emergence of Down Syndrome in the media, especially in television and film, has raised several discussions on the subject. Moreover, the emergence of inclusion school is generating these people, since the 1990, a demand of educators for information about the syndrome not only concerned but also other deficiencies. This article intends to devote itself to social boundaries that were built from the nineteenth century, when the disability becomes called into question by modern medicine. The disability, to be the most characteristic of this syndrome, will also be discussed in the article to assess social and historical factors of itsconstitution, as some of its psychological aspects, based on psychology socio-historical. The text organizes itself into two parts: the first is dedicated to presenting a brief history of the medical-scientific discourse of disability started in Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. The second talks about Down Syndrome and mental retardation, organic and addressing social aspects of incorporation.
