^lpt^aEste artigo aborda a contribuição dos estudos sobre o parentesco para a compreensão do que é a família. Sem pretender dar conta de toda a contribuição antropológica, trata particularmente de como a Antropologia contribuiu para pensar o caráter social (e não natural) da família e a não universalidade do nosso modelo de família nuclear. Destaca o significado do casamento e do tabu do incesto como instituições sociais, sobretudo a partir da obra de Lévi- Strauss, e sua contribuição para o pensamento antropológico sobre o parentesco. A decomposição das diversas relações que compõem o parentesco e a família, tal como apresentada no texto, esclarece que a mudança na família não é um processo totalizante.^len^aThis paper reports the contribution of kinship studies to the understanding of the family. It refers to the anthropological contribution to the subject, particularly on the analysis of the social character of the family and the non-universality of our pattern of nuclear family. It also highlights the meaning of marriage and the incest taboo as social institutions, stressed mainly by the work of Lévi-Strauss, a turning point in anthropological thought on kinship. The decomposition of the different relations that compose kinship and the family presented in the text, helps one to understand their social character and that family change is not a totalizing process.
