^lpt^aA exploração progressiva dos limites da plasticidade no desenvolvimento de padrões instintivos, levou-nos a comparar a ontogênese do comportamento de limpeza corporal em moscas, submetidas a condições diferentes a partir da eclosão. Atenção especial foi dada àquelas variações e constâncias que pudessem revelar o grau de complexidade da organização comportamental nestes insetos. Encontramos evidências de que é justamente a plasticidade do sistema que é selecionada, ou seja, a possibilidade de ajustamento a condições variadas, ao longo da ontogênese. A ocorrência de movimentos no "vazio", o desenvolvimento subseqüente de padrões "substitutivos" e as potenciais alternâncias destas categorias, sob certas circunstâncias, sugeriram várias idéias sobre a ontogênese, aparentemente incompatíveis com uma concepção de organização comportamental simples e estereotipada, mesmo para os padrões instintivos de insetos.^len^aProgressive exploration of plasticity limits in the development of instinctive patterns has led us to a study comparing the self cleaning behavior ontogenesis in flies, under several conditions, following eclosion. Special attention was devoted to those variations and constancies that could reveal the degree of complexity of the behavioral organization in these insects, We found support for the view that what is selected is the plasticity of the system, that is, the possibility of adjustement to varied conditions during ontogeny. The emission of "vaccum" movements, the subsequent development of "substitute" patterns, and the potencial alternations between these categories under certain circumstances, suggested several ideas concerning the ontogenesis, which seem to be incompatible with the conception of a simple and stereotyped behavioral organization, even for instinctive behavioral patterns of insects.
