^lpt^aO adiamento do projeto de ter filhos, que tem resultado na maternidade e na paternidade tardias, sobretudo nas camadas médias da população brasileira, é um fenômeno recente. Neste trabalho, propõe-se discutir a expectativa de jovens adultos frente ao tornar-se pai e mãe na atualidade. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa, na qual foram entrevistados quatro jovens adultos, dois homens e duas mulheres, dos segmentos médios da população carioca. Da análise dos discursos dos entrevistados emergiram quatro categorias: tempo biológico; estabilidade financeira; o lugar do pai; o momento perfeito para tornar-se pai e mãe. Os resultados apontam para uma idealização do momento perfeito para tornar-se pais e para uma disjunção entre as demandas sociais e as limitações biológicas frente à procriação.^len^aThe postponement of the project of having children, which results in late motherhood and fatherhood, especially for middle-class Brazilians, is a recent phenomenon. The aim of the present study is to investigate the expectations of young adults in relation to becoming fathers and mothers today. In order to meet this goal, a qualitative research was conducted, in which four young adults were interviewed. Participants were two men and two women from carioca middle-class. From the discursive analysis of interviews four categories emerged: biological time; financial stability; father’s place, and the perfect moment to become fathers and mothers. Results point to idealization of the perfect moment to become fathers and mothers, as well as to a disjunction between social demands and biological limitations in the face of procreation.
