^lpt^aEste artigo tem como objetivo investigar as crenças que os pretendentes a adoção possuem sobre a possibilidade de adotar um filho com deficiência. Participaram dessa pesquisa nove casais com idades entre 29 e 51 anos, que aguardaram aproximadamente um ano para serem chamados para a avaliação psicossocial em uma comarca do Estado de Santa Catarina. Para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se como instrumento a entrevista semiestruturada, sendo que os temas investigados foram: motivações dos casais para a prática de adoção, conhecimento acerca da deficiência, o que pensam sobre a adoção de um filho com deficiência e as características que almejam no futuro filho. Os resultados indicaram que as barreiras se sobressaem, sendo que as mais destacadas foram: dependência, tempo e condição financeira. Em relação as características, os casais participantes relataram desejar um filho semelhante a eles, tanto na aparência física, quanto na personalidade.^len^aThis article aims to investigate the beliefs that the adoption suitors have about the possibility of adopting a disabled child. Nine couples were participating on this study, they were between 29 and 51 years old. They waited approximately one year to be called for a psychosocial evaluation in the State of Santa Catarina. For the data collection, the semi-structured interview was used as an instrument, and the themes investigated were: couples' motivations for adoption practice, knowledge about the disability, what they think about the adoption of a disabled child and the characteristics that they hope for in the children's future. The results indicated that the barriers stand out, with the most outstanding being: dependence, time and financial condition. Regarding the characteristics, the participating couples reported a certain wish for a child similar to them, both physical appearance and personality.
