This article aims to present the psychological and cognitive functions that drivers use to drive and its implications for traffic safety. The subject deserves attention, facing the troubling statistics of traffic accidents, killing people every day and highlight the perceived need of investment and research in this area. Driving a car involves multiple cognitive stimulation and behavior of the driver, being a complex activity that is often not understood in all its dimensions. The study is of theoretical and exploratory. The understanding and identification of predictors of risk behavior in traffic have relevance for to the effectiveness of preventive interventions. The understanding and identification of major psychological and cognitive functions of driving favor the evaluation of predictors of risk behaviors, and their relevance to corroborate the effectiveness of preventive interventions in traffic. © Cien.
