^lpt^aEste artigo tem por objetivo apresentar as funções psicológicas e cognitivas que motoristas utilizam ao dirigir e suas implicações em relação a segurança no trânsito. O tema merecer atenção, frente aos dados estatísticos preocupantes de acidentes no trânsito, que vitimam pessoas todos os dias e ressaltam a necessidade eminente de pesquisas e investimentos nesta área. A condução de um veículo envolve múltiplos estímulos cognitivos e atitudes do motorista, sendo uma atividade complexa, que muitas vezes não é compreendida em todas as suas dimensões. O estudo realizado é de cunho teórico e exploratório. A compreensão e identificação das principais funções psicológicas e cognitivas do ato de dirigir favorecem a avaliação de fatores preditores de comportamentos de risco, assim sua relevância em corroborar para a efetividade de intervenções preventivas no trânsito. © Cien. The subject deserves attention, facing the troubling statistics of traffic accidents, killing people every day and highlight the perceived need of investment and research in this area. Driving a car involves multiple cognitive stimulation and behavior of the driver, being a complex activity that is often not understood in all its dimensions. The study is of theoretical and exploratory. The understanding and identification of predictors of risk behavior in traffic have relevance for to the effectiveness of preventive interventions. The understanding and identification of major psychological and cognitive functions of driving favor the evaluation of predictors of risk behaviors, and their relevance to corroborate the effectiveness of preventive interventions in traffic. © Cien.
