^lpt^aO artigo analisa dados parciais de pesquisa realizada na periferia do Rio de Janeiro; enfoca as falas de 39 jovens acerca das questões que os afetam e persegue os sentidos atribuídos à família, tanto no que diz respeito à família de convivência quanto no que se refere à família como ideal. Na análise, o texto vale-se de estudos acerca da juventude na sociedade contemporânea, em particular da juventude brasileira, e toma por referência a noção de ideal tal como tratada na teoria psicanalítica. Conclui-se que a idealização da família pelo jovem (a) deve ser entendida tanto a partir de questões individuais quanto sociais; e (b) aponta para a necessidade de intervenções que ofereçam referências extra-familiares capazes de auxiliar os jovens na consecução de seus projetos futuros, delimitando o lugar institucional ocupado pela família.^len^aThis article analyzes partial data acquired during research in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro; it deals with interviews with 39 youngs concerning questions that affect them and pursues the meanings given to family, both with respect to a cohabitation group and the family as an ideal. In the analysis, we take advantage of studies on youth in contemporary society, in particular the Brazilian youth, and utilize the notion of ideal as treated in psychoanalytical theory. We conclude that the idealization of family (a) should be better understood as a matter of both individual and social spheres; and (b) demands interventions capable of providing them with extra-familiar references as a way of helping the young in the consecution of their future projects as well as delimitating the institutional functions of the family.
