This study investigated the perception of evangelical couples about how religion interfered in the decision to marry and in marital satisfaction. Five heterosexual couples participated in the research, a total of 10 subjects, with ages ranging from 35 to 68 years old (M = 52.20; SD = 11.11), who had been married or in a stable relationship for more than 10 years. In the data collection, a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were used. The results indicated the socializing function of religion, as well as the normatization of christian morality, establishing marriage as an ideal and advocating sex after marriage. As for marital satisfaction, the participants stated that religion helps to maintain a loving union, but the importance of communication, good coexistence and empathy with the spouse was also evidenced. Based on the results of this study, it was possible to observe that couples have the perception that religion helps them to maintain their marriage as well as to face adversity.
