^lpt^aSexualidade é um tema complexo, atravessado por questões individuais, familiares, sociais e culturais. O casamento tradicional e a família nuclear passam por profundas alterações, podendo gerar novos desafios conjugais. Este estudo buscou compreender a função que o sexo cumpre nos casamentos de nove casais heterossexuais, em diferentes estágios do ciclo de vida familiar. Participantes foram selecionados por conveniência em Betim-MG e fizeram parte de um grupo focal com esposas e outro com maridos. Os dados foram analisados através da análise textual discursiva. Os resultados demonstraram que os participantes consideram o sexo elemento importante para o casamento. Percebeu-se a existência de funções diferentes para homens e mulheres: eles buscam prazer e relaxamento no orgasmo, e prezam pela quantidade, e elas valorizam mais romantismo e intimidade, prezando pela qualidade da relação sexual. A função do sexo não mudou com a chegada de novas fases do ciclo de vida, mas cada fase trouxe desafios para a relação, podendo gerar tensões e conflitos. Os resultados indicam que intervenções terapêuticas com casais e pesquisas futuras precisam levar em consideração as diferentes funções do sexo para homens e mulheres nas relações conjugais.^len^aSexuality is a complex theme, crossed by individual, family, social and cultural issues. Traditional marriage and the nuclear family undergo profound changes, which may generate new marital challenges. This study sought to understand the role that sexual intercourse play in the marriages of nine heterosexual couples, at different stages of the family life cycle. Participants were selected by convenience sampling, in Betim city, Brazil. Data collection was done through a focus group with wives and another with husbands. This data was analyzed through discursive textual analysis. The results demonstrated that participants considered intercourse an important element for marriage. Different functions were perceived for men and women: men seek pleasure and relaxation in orgasm and cherish the quantity and woman value more romanticism and intimacy, cherishing the sexual intercourse quality. The role of sex has not changed with the change of stages in the life cycle of these couples, but each phase brought relationship challenges, generating tensions and conflicts. The results indicate that therapeutic interventions with couples and future research need to consider the different roles of sex for men and women in marital relationships.
