Aiming to conduct a scientometric analysis on career commitment, this study searched scientific papers indexed in two Brazilian and one international database, using the term in question in Portuguese and English, respectively. The search period was delimited as 2002 through 2011. Among the 97 articles retrieved, 87 were analyzed. The main results indicate that the frequency of publications per year is not uniform, foreign production volume is higher, and the journals are targeted to different audiences. As regards the design of the studies, there was a prevalence of empirical research, as well as predominant use of quantitative data analysis and scales as measuring instruments. The samples tend to be composed of professionals of both sexes and over a hundred constructs were related to the career commitment variable. The need is emphasized for more qualitative and theoretical studies to investigate, for example, the development of the construct and how it influences other work-related variables. The relevance of career commitment in understanding the professional development of individuals and wide applicability of its study on organizational and academic contexts is emphasized.
