^lpt^aEstudos antropológicos mostram que em quase todas as civilizações o ser humano sempre buscou maneiras de induzir estados alterados de consciência. A experiência imaginária tem sido, em todas as épocas e em todas as culturas, muito valorizada. O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir este tipo de experiência provocada pelo uso de substâncias psicoativas, tendo como fundamentação a teoria do imaginário apresentada por Jean-Paul Sartre. A experiência imaginária é um aspecto central do psiquismo humano, pois sua função irrealizante permite ao sujeito transcender uma dada situação em direção a um fim e, por isso mesmo, ir além de sua realidade, o que, por um lado, pode ser "transformador" e, por outro, "alienador". Tudo depende da relação do sujeito com o mundo, de seu contexto antropológico, de sua situação concreta na vida de relações, da estruturação de sua personalidade e da função que a vida imaginária possa ter nesse conjunto.^len^aStudies in anthropology have shown that almost all civilizations have always sought ways to induce it. The imaginary experience has been highly valued throughout time and in all cultures. The objective of this study is discussing this kind of experience stimulated by psychoactive substances, based on the theory of the imaginary by Jean-Paul Sartre. The imaginary experience is a core aspect of the human psyche, because its unrealizing function allows the subject to transcend a given situation toward an end and, therefore, transcend its reality - which, on one hand may be "transforming" and, on the other hand, "alienating". It all depends on the relation the subject have with the world, its anthropological context, its concrete situation in the life of relationships, the structure of its personality and on the role the imaginary life may play in this context.
