^lpt^aA partir de pesquisa com coletivos estudantis de uma universidade do interior de Minas Gerais, Brasil, é relatado sobre o uso da observação participante como instrumento de investigação. O artigo faz uma reflexão sobre esse instrumento, que caracterizou a pesquisa como de tipo etnográfico, destacando a capacidade de a observação participante criar uma relevante relação dialógica entre os sujeitos da pesquisa. Relata-se a observação de eventos da UNE (União Nacional dos Estudantes), em 2016 e 2017. No ENUNE, se estabeleceu uma importante relação dialógica entre o adulto pesquisador e jovens pesquisadas e pesquisados. No CONUNE, para além de uma pesquisa com jovens, a observação participante combinou os olhares do adulto pesquisador e da jovem pesquisadora, o que também permitiu o cotejo de diferentes formas de interação com os sujeitos pesquisados em campo. Conclui-se com a defesa da importância de que as equipes de pesquisa tenham espaço para ativa participação de jovens, não apenas como "tarefeiras" e "tarefeiros", mas também na tomada de decisões sobre a metodologia, na investigação empírica e nas análises, potencializando a qualidade da pesquisa e o impacto de seus resultados.^len^aBased on research with student groups from a university in the interior of Minas Gerais, Brasil, it is reported on the use of participant observation as an investigation tool. The article reflects on this instrument, which characterized the research as ethnographic style, highlighting the capacity for participant observation to create a relevant dialogical relationship between the research subjects. The observation of events of the UNE (National Student Union), in 2016 and 2017, are reported. In ENUNE, an important dialogic relationship was established between the adult researcher and young people researched. In CONUNE, in addition to research with young people, participant observation combined the views of the adult researcher and the young researcher, which also allowed the comparison of different forms of interaction with the subjects researched in the field. The article is concluded with the defense of the importance that research teams have space for the active participation of young people, not only as "task makers", but also in making decisions about methodology, in empirical research and analysis, enhancing the quality of the research and the impact of its results.
