Because of the potential of this strategy, the objective was to analyze the conceptions of managers over mental health matrix support, their evaluation of this strategy effects and its proposals to strengthen this support. Semistructured interviews were held with 11 managers, including the ones from Psychosocial Cares Centers (CAPES), from Health Unities (US) and from municipal coordination of mental health. This research used qualitative approach, such as Bardin content analysis technic. The results showed three groups of matrix support understandings: as thematic appropriation and mental health care by the Primary Care, as a labor inspection strategy of primary care and as a training device and guidance for mental health action. It was also highlighted the expansion of mental health care with matrix support and the difficulty to implement productive meetings lined in building partnerships for health promotion. Thus, it was verified the importance of matrix support to be placed constantly under review, believing that this interaction enables a comprehensive health care.
