Abstract With the gradual increase of violence, the jail inmates' population has been growing throughout the last years, and the proportion of women, in relation to men, has increased. Several studies point out a higher prevalence of mental derangement in prison population than in the community, which might be associated to criminality. The study objective to describes the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of incarcerated women, besides verifying the prevalence of use, abuse or dependency of alcohol and another drugs. Two hundred and eighty seven women incarcerated in a Female Prison participated; representing 35% of the female prison population in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. The design was that of a quantitative and transversal study. The findings showed that the profile of jailed women is characterized by them being single, servers a sentence for drug trafficking, have had some contact with the prison atmosphere, before being interned, through visits and have already had some family member in jail. © Cien.
