This research report aims to present an experience in the elaboration and execution of a Training Course in Mental Health Care held initially in the second semester of 2019 and repeated in the first semester of 2020 in a Federal Institution of Higher Education in South Brazil. This course was offered in four meetings totaling twenty hours of training, mixing theoretical aspects and practical experiences. Its proposal was made effective due to the recognition of the proponents, both psychologists, that the team in the sector where they worked lacked the security to offer an initial listening and refer students who were emotionally altered. Thus, we present in this article the methodology used for the course, in addition to exploring the contents worked on in order to finally conclude that the training has achieved its objectives, to outline our thesis that a training in mental health, when offered to professionals in the fields different from that of psychology and/or psychiatry, brings important results in improving the quality of care and in developing the mental health of the attending professional himself.
