GUERRERO, Cristina E. García  e  MORENO, Belén Pérez. Risk factors related to the development of depression after traumatic brain injury. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2014, vol.6, n.3, pp.25-46. ISSN 2075-9479.  https://doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2014.0155.

Neurobehavioral disorders, especially depression, are frequent after traumatic brain injury. The aim of this study was to identify the frequency of depression after head trauma and the risk factors related to its development. A systematic review was conducted; 21 review studies and 50 empirical articles were found and analyzed. The frequency of depression was variable, but it tended to appear in 40-49% of the patients with traumatic brain injury, and specifically major depression disorder was present in 10-29% of these patients. Risk factors associated with the development of depression were biological, social and psychological. Contrary to what has been considered in relation to the risk factors for postraumatic depression, in this review it was noted that the severity, time post-injury and age not appear to be more important than the localization of the injury and other psychological and environmental factors for the development of depression. In conclusion, to know the biopsychosocial factors to help identify patients at risk for developing depression after traumatic brain injury is useful to their prognosis and better treatment.
