This paper aims to discuss how empathic understanding, the facilitating attitude of human growth developed by Carl Rogers, is configured as an ethical action in mental health care. In order to achieve this, a brief history of the field of assistance to the person suffering from psychic suffering was made, starting from the asylum model born in psychiatric hospitals and then going through the various mental health reforms around the world, until we reach the current model of care psychosocial, which presents itself as a propitious context for the emergence of ethical action. We present the idea that in the manicomial model it was not possible to sustain an ethical dimension in the relational scope, since the old psychiatric paradigm privileged the mental disorder to the detriment of the person. Finally, aspects related to the concept of empathy and the possible dialogue with the Levinasian ethics were analyzed, whose approximations allow to infer that the emphatic understanding of Rogers is an essentially ethical attitude.
