SANTOS, Milena Mendonça dos  e  TRINDADE, Iassodara Collyer Soares. Shame of being, shame of having: reports of HIV serum-positive puerperal women. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2014, vol.17, n.2, pp.62-82. ISSN 1516-0858.

Being feminine is constructed from social rules and values, internalized through the socialization process of individuals. Breaking these rules may result in the appearance of shame. This study aimed to recognize the feeling of shame in reports of mothers seropositive for HIV, hospitalized in a ward of a hospital in maternal and child reference. The qualitative method was used, upon conducting a semi-structured interview. Ten mothers undergoing cesarean section in this institution, seropositive for HIV, and in the age group above 18 years, were interviewed. It was found that the feeling of shame was present in the story of mothers. This article discusses the management of the health team that once trained to support and encourage exclusive breastfeeding, finds it difficult and often takes non-functional postures in the face of situations in which the contraindication of breastfeeding produces on the patients feelings of shame and suffering. Taking into account the above, it is necessary that the health staff reflect on the implications of their actions on the experience of HIV by mothers during the hospitalization period, in order not to cause injuries to this process, and to contribute to improve the quality of life of these.
