LUIZ DE FREITAS, Nathália; DE OLIVEIRA FERREIRA, Fernanda  e  GERALDI HAASE, Vítor. Linguistic aspects involved in the ability to transcode between different representations of number. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp.02-15. ISSN 1806-5821.

The ability of numerical transcoding (TN) between the different representations (verbal-oral, arabic etc.) is fundamental to perform complex arithmetic activities. However, the mechanisms underlying TN in Portuguese are still poorly understood. Thus, we investigate the existence of linguistic aspects involved in the ability of TN. Participants 391 children between 7 and 12 years, of which we collected information on the performance graph-phonemic decoding, through the School Achievement Test - SAT - and in numerical transcoding by the tasks of reading and dictation of numbers. Participants were divided into control and lower performance in phonemic decoding, as the SAT. The data were treated by frequent testing simple Pearson correlational and magnitude of the Cohen, and through analysis of errors in TN based on categories proposed for other languages. The results indicate the possibility that the TN be semiotic nature, be influenced by performance on basic language skills, in addition to highlighting the existence of specific patterns of cognitive processing in TN that may be universal and others that may be specific to the Portuguese. © Cien.
