BASSO, Fernando  e  WEINMANN, Amadeu de Oliveira. The master's house, the master's discourse and the barracoon: interpretation and coloniality. Rev. Polis Psique [online]. 2019, vol.9, n.3, pp.133-151. ISSN 2238-152X.

This paper shows an analysis of Charles Melman's interpretation about Brazilian colonization, presenting his psychoanalytical reading of Gilberto Freyre's book The masters and the slaves, using as lead the Lacanian concept of the master's discourse. During this theoretical path, we introduce the main conceptual elements that sustain Melman's interpretation about Brazilian culture: the verticalization of discourse, colonial sexuality founded on sadomasochism and the proposition of a psychopathology of colonization. Later on, we discuss the counterpoint made by some psychoanalysts, concerning such interpretation about Brazil, as well as we contextualize the controversies between psychoanalysis and coloniality, pointing to the French declinology (the paternal function decline hypothesis) as a new version of colonial eurocentrism. Finally, we ask again the question that guides the writing of this paper: can a psychoanalytical interpretation be a coloniality act?

Palavras-chave : psychoanalysis; interpretation; coloniality; Brazilian culture.
