SANTOS, Carlos Eduardo Souza dos et al. Frequency of psychotic symptoms in patients with liver transplant indication in Recife: cross-sectional study. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2016, vol.19, n.2, pp.44-61. ISSN 1516-0858.

Objective: describe the sociodemographic profile and evaluate frequency of psychotic symptoms in individuals on the waiting list for liver transplantation in a teaching hospital in Recife. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, sociodemographic questionnaire and Scale for Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) were used. Frequency measures obtained were worked in the Epi-Info 3.5.4. Results: Total 45 patients. Predominant profile found was: sixth decade of life, male, brown, married, coming from Recife, catholic, incomplete primary education. No reference was made to psychotic symptoms before liver disease. After this, 2.2% had such symptoms. In psychiatric history, family history of mental illness (31.1%) and personal history of use of psychotropic drugs (26.7%) were prominent findings. The SAPS scores did not obtain remarkable results. Relevant items were: auditory hallucinations (4.4% mild), somatic hallucinations (2.2% marked), aggressive/agitated behavior (2.2% mild) and repetitive/stereotyped behavior (4.4% mild). Conclusion: study corroborates the literature on socio-demographic profile and infrequent prevalence of psychotic symptoms in the pre-transplant setting. Mental vulnerability of individuals debilitated by disease and graft waiting in the receive queue justify an in-depth understanding, assisting in the promotion of comprehensive care and early intervention.
