This introductory essay presents some principles of the Substantive Organization approach proposed by Guerreiro Ramos. It begins by discussing the conceptions of society and of man at the base of such approach. From thence, it highlights some of the premises of a university extension program called "Integrating - a Space for the Development of the Senior". This program is being developed at the Federal University of Paraná, and is presented here as an example of an organization that can be understood, by its orienting premises, as a means to cope with an excluding social reality.
