Introduction:
The aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge, attitude, and practice of university students in the health area who have already had sexual intercourse about condom use as a preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) method.
Methodology:
Descriptive survey-type study on Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice, with a cross-sectional design and a quantitative approach. It was performed in an online format, whose information was obtained through the application of a questionnaire during the period from September to December 2021. Data analysis was performed using the JASP 0.9.1.0 and BioEstat 5.0 software.
Results:
Of the 162 participants, 64.8% had adequate knowledge, 52.5% had an adequate attitude, and 98.1% had inadequate practice in relation to prevention. Knowledge was associated with religion (p=0.015), frequency of performing rapid tests (p=0.016), and previous diagnosis of STI (p=0.029); attitude was associated with family income (p=0.027), origin (p=0.017), and gender (p=0.000); there was an association between practice and relationship (p=0.040).
Discussion:
Appropriate access to means of prevention and information favors better attitudes and practices in relation to the use of condoms.
Conclusion:
University students may be vulnerable to STIs, and educational actions aimed at condom adherence are important.
