ALMEIDA, Bruno Vasconcelos de. Genealogies of joy. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.2, pp.97-113. ISSN 1677-1168.
Genealogies of joy aim to track concepts and build plans based on which joy can be considered a troublesome field. They consist of drawing lines and joining historical and literary fragments so as to work as the foundation of the contemporary discussion about joy. The genealogic procedure is supported by excerpts from Calimacus’ and Lucian of Samosata’s works, by Roman erotic elegy, and by Christian joy. The next step consists of tracking the thought of joy in Gilles Deleuze’s works, especially three texts: a passage from Difference and Repetition, an excerpt of the Dialogues extracted from On the Superiority of Anglo-American Literature, and the communication Nomad Thought in the Cerisy Colloquium. Joy is not defined as a feeling or emotion: on the contrary, it is related to the principle of affirmation of life and to the tragic nature of existence.
