BUSTAMANTE, Vania. Paternal involvement in child care during the first year. Pensando fam. [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.1, pp.89-104. ISSN 1679-494X.

A study on paternal participation in child care during the first year in families living in a low-income neighborhood served by the Family Health Program was carried out. Child care is understood from a general theory that integrates: gender, construction of person projects and horizons for health practices. The Bick method of observation of the mother-baby relationship was used in weekly visits to two families for 12 months. It was found permanence in gender relations expressed in scarce paternal participation in the care and domestic work, which coexists with a greater presence of men in relation to health services, especially when it comes to demands that involve contact with public spaces such as medical consultations and purchase of medicines. In parallel, fathers show intense affection for the children and, as part of the social construction of the person, they emphasize the autonomy of the baby since pregnancy. It is important to emphasize the need to strengthen practices that include men, promoting well-being in family diversity.
