SILVA, Leticia Gabriella Nascimento Ribeiro  e  ZIHLMANN, Karina Franco. Pediatric patients in early adolescence under onco-hematological treatment in the hospital setting: the parent's experience. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.1, pp.154-169. ISSN 1516-0858.

The objective of this study was to understand the parent's subjective experiences of pediatric patients in early adolescence under onco-hematological treatment and their demands in the care process in the hospital setting. This was a qualitative research, with semi-structured interviews with five parents of patients aged between 11 and 14 years hospitalized and undergoing treatment, performed at a pediatric oncology unit in a hospital in Baixada Santista region - São Paulo - Brazil. The discourses were categorized through thematic type content analysis, according to Bardin (2011). Parents are targets of expectations on behalf of the health team, but do not have their own needs attended, especially emotional ones, because care is aimed at the patient. The experience of the parents involves suffering, impotence feelings and prioritization of the other. On the other hand, the speeches also revealed feelings of hope, overcoming and dedication to the child in that context. This complex experience makes explicit the importance of a psychological work, in which one tries to open space to allow those involved to be seen in their intrinsic needs.

Palavras-chave : pediatric oncology; hospital psychology; caregiver; adolescent.
