Based on conversations with students from a state school in Fortaleza (CE), we will present the highlighted elements as generating impasses in the crossing from high school to life after its conclusion. The transition between the place occupied in childhood and the construction of a place for oneself in the field of the Other is crossed by uncertainties about the concrete possibilities of continuing studies after the completion of high school. Dreams regarding admission to the University were present, but always covered by questions about the feasibility of entering a degree. In cases where psychological and social suffering was particularly acute, adolescents experienced an expansion of the present, with no projections for the future. The study points to the importance of spaces in which young people can discuss their life projects during high school. By offering a place to speak, the social and subjective determinants of the future can be worked on, in an attempt to break with the subjective and political repetitions that update social inequalities.
