CAMPAGNA, Viviane Namur e SOUZA, Audrey Setton Lopes de. Body and body image in the beginning of feminine adolescence. Bol. psicol [online]. 2006, vol.56, n.124, pp.9-35. ISSN 0006-5943.
The beginning of the feminine adolescence is a phase of intense corporal transformations, when a new elaboration of the body image becomes necessary. Nowadays, this process seems to be more complex, since an idealization of the feminine body occurs. In this context, this work intends to investigate teenagers body image at the beginning of their adolescence, through interviews and Human Figure Drawings made by 20 middle class girls, at the age of 12, from São Paulo city. The conclusion is that this phase of the development is perceived by the girls as a transition, in which it is difficult for them to elaborate their own self-image. The insecurity, dissatisfaction and anxiety related to body appearance, that were only suggested in interviews, became well detectable in the Human Figure Drawings, which also disclosed a ego fragility state and the existence of different forms to deal with the sexuality at this moment of life.
