Studies are being conducted to develop strategies to teach reading using computerized procedures. Some teaching procedures employ isolated words and others use books or short texts. The goal of this study was to verify whether a computerized teaching program, which used the words of selected children's story books, was effective to promote reading of these words on the computer screen and in the books. Nine words were selected from each of five books, four sets of words were taught using exclusion procedure and one set was only tested. The results show that five out of six children with learning disabilities were able to read the words of the five books on the computer and in the books. These results suggest that the strategies used could be effective in reading teaching and in developing reading motivation
