FREITAS, Cíntia Helena Bulgarelli e ANGULO, Mirian. The mother-child relationship right after labor and during breastfeeding: the realistic projective identification through observer’s feelings and sensations. Psicol inf. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.10, pp.83-101. ISSN 1415-8809.
This article presents an outline’s application of Esther Bick’s infants observation method, in a hospital context. The purposes were to verify how the communication takes place among mothers and their babies rigth after labor and during breast-feeding, still in the maternity ambient, and try to find out standards in this type of communication. For those aims, two dyads (motherbaby) were observed. The data analysis indicated that, right in the beginning, the extra-uterine relationship between mother and her baby has a singular quality and each infant has a very particular way to develop this communication with his mother. Nevertheless, some observer’s feelings and sensations were common to both reports, which becomes evident, according to the method preconized by Bick, that some common experiences occoured among both dyads. On one hand, the unpleasant ones, derived from the external negative direct interventions in the dyads relationship, from the mother’s frustrated attempts to fit her brest nipple into the baby’s mouth or from the baby’s attempts to take it. On the other hand, the pleasant ones like confort and peace manifested by the observer’s torpor and sleepiness (which could be the baby’s ones), by the external positive direct interventions and by the fascination and enchantment during the situations of complicity between mother and observer.
