ESTEVES, Carolina Marocco. O resgate do vínculo mãe bebê em casos de maus-tratos: histórias de uma enfermaria de queimados. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2005, vol.8, n.1, pp.27-39. ISSN 1516-0858.

This piece aims to reflect on child abuse and the link between the mother and her baby. It is important to emphasize that one of the more important consequence of child abuse is a bad development of mother and her child link. This paper proposes a practical and theorical discussion, relating the theorical aspects found on two years of professional psychology training on burned (nursing) ward in the Emergency Hospital in Porto Alegre. The discussion aims to show, through clinical cases, the way how treated mothers can build a relationship with their child, as knowing that, the majority of the times, the mothers find themselves unable to carry out the “primary maternal preoccupation” (Winnicott, 2000). One of the factors that contribute to this happen is observed during the psychological treatment by the mother’s previous history: mental illness consequence of child abuse in the past. On this description we elaborate a proposal that aims to promote healthy and/or to prevent illness on the mother and her baby, begging as soon as possible in the hospital with a diagnosis and psychological (or psychiatric) treatment and just after the discharged from the hospital to be continued with the previous treatment during the child development.

Palavras-chave : Child abuse; Primary maternal preoccupation; Mother and baby relationship; Transgenerational.
