GENARO JUNIOR, Fernando. Constraints and achievements of the sense of self in aging: clinical notes. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2020, vol.23, n.1, pp.172-179. ISSN 1516-0858.
This paper proposes to investigate the constraints and achievements of the typical sense of self in aging from a clinical approach. Following the Trinca's comprehensive clinical method, we analyze five clinical notes. We work in a Winnicottian perspective and in dialogue with Safra's contributions. As a result, we present the unfolding states of resentment and dissociation as psychic constraint in the aging process, when confronted to intense revisions on the meaning of life and self. It emerges as a necessity to experience the various aspects of forgiveness. Moreover, we observed that the elderly's sense of self is attributed to future generations as one of its main achievements. The concerns previously emphasized on the "me" change to an "us" as a sense of self: the collective, the social, the welfare of the world.
