The repercussions of the occurrence of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) extend beyond hospital discharge articulating chronic treatment and changes in lifestyle, and may promote the mobilization of the patient's support network. The goal of the study was to understand the possible changes and reverberations of AMI in the conjugal plot. The descriptive qualitative research used a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured individual interview with eight people: four patients hospitalized with defined criteria for AMI for at least six months, and their respective spouses. The results, analyzed by the phenomenological method, were reverted in three categories that reflect the experience of conjugality permeated by the AMI: 1) The role of marital support (review of the roles, dynamics and structures of the dyads); 2) The dimension of sexual activity (significant impact and lack of approach to the team); and 3) The importance of lifestyle rearrangements (reverberation of treatment care in marital adjustment). We concluded that the support network of the heart attack patient must be urgently included in the interventions and health education of the multiprofessional team, given the impact of the cardiac, event on the marital dynamics and the need to favor a better psychosocial adjustment to the disease.
