TORRES, Gilson de Vasconcelos et al. Family functionality of dependent elderly residents in the house calls. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.3, pp.415-423. ISSN 1677-0471.
The aim of this study is to analyze the family functionality of a dependent elderly population residing in the hinterland of northeast Brazil. This is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The sample was composed of 117 dependent elderly individuals enrolled in the Family Health Units. The instruments used were the Family APGAR and Barthel`s Index; social demographic and health data were also collected. The mean age was 80.79 (± 9.77) years, with a predominance of women (70.09%) and illiterates (63.25%). Health problems were present in 93.16% of the elderly, the most frequent pathology being arterial hypertension (23.10%). Regarding family functionality, 73.50% reported compromised. Knowing family functionality is important for developing appropriate home care mechanisms for the health of the elderly and their family.
