CORSO, Helena Vellinho e PICCOLO, Luciane da Rosa. Efficacy Evaluation of a Reading Comprehension Program - Intervention Results in the Fifth Year. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.spe, pp.1703-1727. ISSN 1808-4281. https://doi.org/10.12957/epp.2021.64042.
This study aims to evaluate the effects of the Reading Comprehension and Enchantment program - Forming Motivated and Competent Readers (LE) in fifth-grade students attending public schools. Participants were 64 children (29 girls; 35 boys; average age 10 years old), which were allocated to intervention and control groups. The teacher of the intervention group was trained to implement the program, which consisted of a selection of narrative texts and a set of activities focusing on two integrated core components: reading comprehension and executive functions. Students were evaluated before and after the intervention on reading measures (word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension) and neuropsychological tasks (executive functions). Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed higher scores at follow-up assessment on measures of reading comprehension and executive functions, with effect sizes ranging from medium (Cohen's d=0.56) to high (d=0.92). These results indicate (1) the effectiveness of the program, highlighting the low socioeconomic level of the sample, a variable related to low levels of reading; (2) its applicability at schools, given its successful implementation by a teacher in her classrooms.
