Family factors associated with talent development in sportsThis study aimed at constructing and validating a scale, named Factor Inventory of Parental Practices Related to Talent Development in Sports (IFATE), which assesses the frequency in which parental practices related to talent development in sports were implemented by parents of athletes according to the athletes’ perception. The scale was answered by 225 adults high performance athletes, distributed among twenty sports modalities. The results indicated that the IFATE is composed by five factors: the Involvement in Children’s Sports Practice, Informative and Emotional Support provided by the Family, Family’s Beliefs Related to Children’s Potential, Family Values, and Family Expectations on Children’s Performance. The alpha coefficients of reliability varied from .58 to .89. The results of this study provide relevant information for further assistance and guidance programs to athletes, parents and coaches as for aspects related to the role played by athletes’ families in the talent development in sports.
