The reading ability is essential for successful academic performance in a lot of situations. Research has shown that reading ability is related to the text difficulty level. The objective of this research was to explore the difficulty level of the items in reading comprehension measured through Cloze’s technique. The sample was composed of 574 university students of the three private universities of the São Paulo and Minas Gerais states. Reading comprehension was measured using a text based on Cloze’s technique. Participant’s answers were evaluated according to two criteria. One analysed the right and the wrong answers not considering the item difficulty level. The other considered the item difficulty in accordance with the text context. Results showed some differences between the two-correction punctuation procedures. The analysis of variance also had shown significant differences in reading comprehension among the different courses.
