The James/Lange hypothesis remains, according to which bodily sensations are essential components of emotional awareness, a relevant topic for courses in the psychology of emotions. We present here a class exercise, inspired in the research done by Nieuwenhuyse, Offenberg e Frijda (1987). In this exercise, students are required to individually indicate in which part of their bodies each basic emotion is felt. Quantitative results are then discussed collectively. The application of this classroom procedure has throughout the years confirmed published results and revealed that the perceived bodily localization of basic emotions is clearly different. The exercise generates interest and participation among students and may be used as a starting point for stimulating discussions about the nature of emotional processes.
