OLIVEIRA, Cristiane. Higiene matrimonial, sexualidade e modos de subjetivação no brasil do século XIX (1847-1870). Rev. Epos [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 2178-700X.
This paper examines the diffusion of the hygienist logic of weddings by nineteenth-century medical thought and its resonances in the transition from patriarchal family to the nuclear family in Brazil. This is a historical study, inspired by Foucault, whose corpus were theses, books and Brazilian medical journals of the 19th century (1847-1870). Through a comprehensive set of hygienic requirements, marriage was lauded as essential to the progress of the nation, at the expense of the virulent condemnation both of renunciation of sexual life in ecclesiastical celibacy, and sexual experiences that occurred in the vicinity of the marriage institution, considered excessive, such as licentiousness and nymphomania. Thus, we profiled the traits of a regulatory ideal capable of modeling husbands and wives to the task of making marriage the basis of a project of cleaning and thereafter eugenization of society.
